Winner of four Oscars, including Best Film and Best Actress, Nomadland was the biggest winner at the recent Academy Awards 2021.

And if you've yet to see what all the fuss is about, viewers can now watch the acclaimed movie on the big screen following the latest easing of lockdown restrictions.

The film stars four-time Oscar-winner Frances McDormand alongside a cast of real-life, modern-day nomads. McDormand plays Fern, a woman who loses her job and decides to sell-up and travel, living out of her van (something that McDormand also did during filming).

If you can't make it to the cinema, don't worry, as viewers in the UK and Ireland can now stream the film on Star on Disney Plus.

At the Oscars, the drama also picked up Best Director for director Chloé Zhao (who directs the upcoming Marvel film Eternals). The film also won big with two major gongs at the Golden Globe Awards 2021.

Based on Jessica Bruder's non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America In The Twenty-First Century, the well-received film has won rave reviews in the run-up to awards season. Read more about the adaptation of Nomadland from a true story.

How to watch Nomadland in the UK

In March it was announced that Nomadland will premiere on Star on Disney Plus in the UK and Ireland on 30th April 2021, and will be available to all Disney Plus subscribers at no additional charge.

Now that cinemas have reopened, the film is also available to watch on the big-screen in the UK from 17th May 2021.

US subscribers can watch the film on Hulu. The film previously premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

Nomadland plot: What is the film about?

The film follows Fern, a woman who loses her job following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, in part due to the financial crash. Her husband also recently passed away, so she decides to sell up and live in a van, travelling to find work and living as a nomad.

According to the official synopsis, Fern "packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad," while fellow nomads become "Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West". Her story also challenges conventional notions of success and the American Dream.

Nomadland cast

Frances McDormand plays central character Fern, while the film also features a number of real-life nomads playing versions of themselves, including Bob Wells, Swankie, and Linda May. During production, various cast and crew members lived out of vans themselves.
